Mataram — The Undergraduate Program in Cultural and Religious Tourism at IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram held a public lecture titled Japan Experience Day (Session 1), carrying the theme “Exploring Japanese Culture and Understanding the Concept of Omotenashi in Serving Japanese Tourists.” The event took place on Thursday, April 30, 2026, at the 2nd Floor Hall of the Rectorate Building.

The program opened with remarks from the Program Coordinator, Ni Putu Sasmika Dewi, S.S., M.Si., who emphasized that the lecture was part of efforts to strengthen learning in Japanese Language and Culture courses, particularly the concept of omotenashi, which is highly relevant to the tourism sector. She further noted that the event marked the institution’s first initiative focused on introducing Japanese culture within IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram, especially in the Cultural and Religious Tourism program. “This activity serves as a strategic starting point and is planned to be developed into a sustainable program to continuously enhance students’ competencies,” she stated.

She also highlighted that the program is expected to motivate students to prepare for international internship opportunities in Japan, following in the footsteps of their seniors who have already participated in similar programs. The lecture featured Kaori Ushida, Chair of NTB Japan Club, who shared insights into Japanese culture, including the values of omotenashi, and introduced traditional attire through a hands-on yukata demonstration.

Delivered in an engaging and interactive manner, the session created an enjoyable learning environment. The event was attended by students of the Cultural and Religious Tourism program, some of whom also practiced jikoshokai (self-introduction) in Japanese as part of strengthening their language skills. The Rector of IAHN Gde Pudja Mataram, Prof. Dr. Ir. I Wayan Wirata, A.Ma., S.E., M.Si., M.Pd., was also present to show his support and took part in trying on a yukata alongside the speaker. In his remarks, he stated, “This activity is an important step in equipping students with global competencies, particularly in tourism. Cultural values such as omotenashi are highly relevant and can be adapted to deliver professional and internationally competitive tourism services.”

Through this program, students gained not only conceptual understanding but also practical experience that enriches their cross-cultural insights and prepares them for the global workforce.
